Free Piece
This month's free piece is a folk inspired melody aptly titled “Folk Song”. If you are going to play it, make sure to keep the melody clear above the bass and harmony with good articulation. There are a handful of grace notes, glissandos, and slurs in there too. It's those little nuances that give life to a melody. I hope you enjoy playing it…or just listening to it.
Buddhism Meets Neuroscience is a fascinating conversation between leading neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and the Dalai Lama that is centered around ideas about consciousness, the brain vs. mind, the self, mental illness, and how science and Buddhism can influence and learn from each other. Despite the heavy ideas, the book is very readable and extremely thought provoking. Highly recommended!
Tom Eaton's latest single “Harriet and the Hurricane” features the incomparable Jill Haley on English Horn. Like everything Tom releases…it's brilliant. Head over to his Bandcamp page to listen to his work.
Anastasia Kobekina is one of my favorite cellists. Her technique and musicality is absolutely off the charts. She is able to get inside music like few others can. Her 2022 release Ellipses is a great place to start discovering her work. The Debussy, Villa-Lobos, and Fauré are standouts on this recording. All of her recordings are stunning.
I finally got around to watching the Ronnie James Dio documentary Dio - Dreamers Never Die, and it is freaking amazing! If you are a rock/metal fan, you know that he was one of the greatest voices in rock and roll (Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio), but you might not have know how incredible he was as a human being. This is an excellent telling of his life story. I am so grateful that I got to see/hear him live back on the Last in Line tour…this brought it all back to me. Legend! 🤘🏻
